Enchanting Cappadocia

A wondrous place on Earth, with a picturesque, captivating landscape steeped in the culture of the ancient Roman Empire, the Iranian epic Shahnameh, the Persian Empire, the ancient Cimmerian tribes, Homer, and the Ottoman Empire, it can rightfully be called the Eighth Wonder of the World. The history of Cappadocia begins in the first millennium BC, and today it is a favorite destination for tourists from all over the world. The Bible tells of the descent of the Holy Spirit upon the apostles, making Cappadocia a frequent destination for pilgrims. The ancient settlements in this area are listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

"Land of beautiful horses" is how Huw-aspa-dahyu is translated from Iranian. In ancient scriptures, it is known by its Old Persian name, Haspaduya.

"Place below the capital" - the Hittite name katta peda is mentioned in the writings of the ancient Greek historian Herodotus, it is mentioned that the Persians called the inhabitants of this region Cappadocians.

Located in the eastern part of Asia Minor, Cappadocia is surrounded on the south by Mount Erciyes and Mount Hasan and is washed by the Kızıl Irmak and Yeşil Irmak rivers. The former is Turkey's longest river and is also known as the Red River due to the color of its water, which is due to the color of the clay.

SIGHTS OF CAPPADOCIA

One of the region's most important and famous sites is Göreme National Park. It is an open-air museum, spread over 300 square meters of land surrounded by the towns of Nevşehir, Ürgüp, and Avanos. The park is a complex of rock formations, caves, monasteries, and churches. The town of Çavuşin is famous for being the home of John the Baptist. The church founded in his honor remains to this day.

Within the national park, you can explore the cave churches: Apple Church, Church of St. Basil, St. Catherine, St. Barbara, Jesus the Almighty, Snake Church, Dark Church, Church with Sandals, and others.

Cave settlements. These were the settlements of early Christians. People scraped out dwellings in the easily worked volcanic tuffs. This is how they built houses, churches, stables, and other living spaces. Ventilation shafts from those times are still operational, and the halls and tunnels are illuminated.

There were nearly 200 such cities in Cappadocia, 30 of which have been explored, but two— Derinkuyu and Kaymakli—are considered the largest and most interesting. They were once inhabited by Christians persecuted by religious persecutors and Arabs.

Romance. The Valley of Love, located between Uchisar and Cavusin. It is also called the "Valley of Phalluses" due to the recognizable shapes of its rock formations.

Pigeon Valley. Rock dovecotes are located here. Rock churches can be found in the Belisyrma, Derbent, Ihlara, Gulludere, Kizilchukur, and Kiliçlar valleys.

Lakes and flamingos. On the road to Cappadocia is Turkey's second-largest salt lake, Lake Tuz. It measures 80 kilometers long, 50 kilometers wide, and up to two meters deep. In the southern part of Lake Tuz, you can admire the beauty of "pink" flamingoson the shore of the water, which is tinted red by algae.

Entertainment - Hot Air Balloons

The most beloved and popular activity in Cappadocia is hot air ballooning. Early in the morning, the view from above is bryeshtaking. A hot air balloon ride over Cappadocia will be a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
